I had never heard of a fruit sandwich until I discovered it at my office cafeteria when I used to work at Cognizant India. They often served a grilled fruit sandwich, which quickly became my go-to breakfast or evening snack. It’s not only filling but also healthy, packed with the goodness of fresh fruits and the delightful crispiness from grilling. You can also check out my fruit chaat (Indian fruit salad) I recently started making this for my daughter’s evening snack, and she loves it. It is a no-fire cooking recipe, so your kid can easily put the sandwich together themselves. For more easy snack ideas, you can also try my cucumber chutney sandwich and veg cream cheese sandwich. A fruit sandwich is made with bread slices, fruit jam, and fresh fruits. Some people even add whipped cream but I prefer without cream. Use any fruits like bananas, apples, strawberries, and kiwi, and avoid watery fruits like watermelon and oranges, as they will make the bread soggy. You can cut them into bite size and put them in the kids’ lunchbox.
Ingredients
Bread slices: For a healthier option, use brown or multigrain bread. White bread works best. Fruit jam: You can use either homemade or store-bought mixed fruit jam. I also enjoy using my homemade strawberry chia jam or pineapple jam. Fruits: I have used bananas, strawberries, and apples. You can also use fruits like kiwi, mango and papaya.
How to Make Fruit Sandwich
Cut the seasonal fruits into thin slices and keep them aside. Take two bread slices and apply fruit jam to both bread slices. First, arrange the banana slices in a single layer on one slice of bread, then add the strawberries and apples on top. Top with another slice of bread, cut the sandwich into two pieces, and serve immediately.
Variations
Tropical Fruit Sandwich: Slice the fruits and add them to the sandwich along with a layer of coconut yogurt or cream cheese. You can also sprinkle some toasted coconut flakes for extra flavor. You can replace fruit jam with cream cheese or mayonnaise.
