What exactly does “chaat” mean in Indian context? Well, chaat is a rather wide term used for a number of dishes. Basically anything spicy, tangy can be termed as chaat. It’s also a loosely used term for Indian street food tike aloo tikki, golgappa etc. Talking about chaat makes my mouth water! I can never have enough. This fruit chaat has fruits yet it’s called a chaat because it’s spicy and tangy and used a blend of spices known as chaat masala.

What is Chaat Masala?

Chaat Masala is a blend of spices like cumin, dried mango powder, black salt, asafetida etc. It’s tangy, sour, spicy – in short the perfect masala to add that zing to so many things! It’s usually always sprinkled over all kinds of chaat, dahi vada, salads and you can also sprinkle it over fruits like in this fruit chaat! I also sprinkle it over my salads, toast, onions & cheese. You can find chaat masala at any Indian grocery store or on amazon. Let me know if you guys want a recipe for homemade chaat masala and I can work on it.

How To Make Fruit Chaat

Start by picking your favorite fruits. The most common one used in fruit chaat are apples, banana, grapes, pears, pomegranate. For this recipe, I used only banana, apple and grapes since that’s all I had in my refrigerator. I really would have loved to use mangoes and pomegranate for the pop of colors (and also because I love them!!) but for now, this is what I had. Once you have your fruits ready to go, toss them together in a bowl. Sprinkle the spices, mint leaves (optional), squeeze in some fresh lemon or lime juice and you are done! Can it get any easier? Seriously, this is such a simple recipe, well kind of not even a recipe but I thought of sharing it anyway since it’s Navratri time and you guys have been asking for simple recipes which can be eaten during fast. One things which I also added to my fruit chaat was fried potatoes – now this is a very Delhi thing to do. So completely optional but I growing up around Delhi, I was kind of used to seeing fruit chaat served with fried potatoes. Let me tell you they taste delicious! But if you want to cut down on the calories, totally okay and you can skip it. You can also simply boil the potatoes, cut them in cubes and use as such. This fruit chaat is just like a fruit salad (like this one) but we call it Fruit Chaat since it has all those spices! Hope you guys like this one!
