Apr 13, 2022 I remember I was in school when these coffee chains had just about started getting popular in India. We didn’t have many but Barista and Café Coffee Day were the two most popular ones. They used to be those fancy coffee shops/hangout places where we would go to have a cup of coffee once in a while. My most favorite used be the cold coffee at Café Coffee Day. That glass of coffee on those super hot days in Delhi used to feel so refreshing. Even now I crave for that coffee and when that craving kicks in, I make this super easy Cold Coffee at home. This is a very basic cold coffee recipe using only 3 ingredients! There are so many ways to jazz up a simple glass of cold coffee. I am sharing the most basic version here.
Ingredients
This basic recipe for homemade cold coffee uses just 3 ingredients which are readily available at home. Coffee: for this recipe, I use instant coffee but you can also use espresso shot or even filter coffee decoction. If using coffee decoction, use 1/4 cup of it. The taste of your cold coffee will depend on the coffee that you use so make sure to use a coffee that you like. Milk: full fat whole milk makes a creamy thick coffee but you can use any milk you like. Using skim milk will make it little diluted. You can also use non-dairy milk options like almond milk, oat milk. Sugar: to sweeten the cold coffee, I have used white sugar. But you can use other sweeteners of choice.
Step by Step Instructions
1- Heat up 1/4 cup milk in a pan or microwave. Add instant 1 & 1/2 to 2 tablespoons instant coffee to it. You can adjust the amount of coffee powder to taste and how strong coffee you prefer. 2- Add in 3 tablespoons sugar (adjust to taste). You can add more or less depending on the sweetness you prefer. 3- Using a spoon or whisk, mix everything together. Since the milk is hot, the coffee and sugar will dissolve easily. 4- Your sweet coffee mix is now ready to be added to the blender. You can also straight away use 1/4 cup of a strong filter coffee decoction or espresso shot. 5- To your blender, now add 2 cups chilled milk. I have used whole milk here. Also add 3 to 4 ice cubes (optional). 6- Add the prepared coffee-sugar mix into the blender. At this point, you can use add vanilla ice cream if you want. 7- Close the lid and blend for few seconds until everything is mixed together and the coffee is frothy. 8- Transfer to glasses and serve immediately. You can pour some chocolate syrup in the glasses and chill for 15 minutes before pouring the coffee in glasses. The foam will settle down after a while so this is best enjoyed immediately especially if you like frothy coffee.
Make it Fancy!
This is how you make a very basic cold coffee. To jazz it up consider the following!
Top the coffee with fresh homemade whipped cream. To make it, just whip some heavy cream (with little powdered sugar) until it forms peaks. Then top the coffee with it. Add vanilla ice cream to your coffee to make it more rich and creamy. Ice cream also adds a really nice flavor to your cold coffee. Garnish with chocolate syrup, chocolate chips or serve with a chocolate wafer. You can also top it with sprinkles.
Flavor Your Cold Coffee
You can flavor this coffee in several ways.
To give it a chocolaty flavor add 1 tablespoon cocoa powder while blending the coffee.Use syrups like hazelnut, caramel or any other flavor to flavor your coffee the way you like.Cinnamon will be another wonderful addition as cinnamon goes well with coffee.
Tips & Notes
The amount of sugar can be adjusted to taste. If you don’t like a sweet cold coffee, then you can reduce the amount of sugar to 1 or 2 tablespoon. For a sweeter coffee, use 4 tablespoons.Cut down on the sugar or use no sugar if using vanilla ice cream in this recipe.Whole milk makes a creamy cold coffee but you can use any milk of choice including dairy-free alternatives. Oat milk will work well here. For a thicker coffee, skip the ice cubes and use vanilla ice cream in place.
