Kale Benefits in Smoothies
When preparing a blueberry kale smoothie, you’re reaping several benefits. First, kale is a natural ingredient that is an excellent source of Vitamin A, folate, and omega-3 fatty acids that support brain health. It is also antioxidant-rich so it helps the body fight free radicals. In addition to these benefits, kale is a good source of fiber. This means that it can help regulate your bowel movements, making you less constipated and bloated than before. The best part about it is that you can’t taste it. When added to this blueberry kale morning smoothie, the other ingredients overpower the flavor.
The Blueberry Kale Smoothie Ingredients
Frozen blueberries: It’s best to use the blueberries while they’re frozen so that your smoothie is already super cold. You won’t even need to add ice to your blender if your blueberries are frozen. Kale: I love using curly green kale. You can also use red kale (aka Russian kale) or any other variety. Spinach is a great substitute if you don’t have any kale at hand. Natural yogurt: I love using homemade natural yogurt. If you buy your yogurt, make sure to get un-flavored with no sugar.Banana: The addition of bananas in this smoothie will make it a bit thicker so that it’s even more enjoyable. If preferred, you can add a frozen banana.Coconut water: Rather than using regular water, you can bring more flavor to this smoothie by replacing it with some coconut water.Vanilla extract: Although optional, a dash of vanilla extract pairs well with all the other ingredients.
If you don’t like coconut water, you can use water, almond milk, oat milk, or even coconut milk. Or a splash of orange juice to prepare this blueberry kale smoothie.
Optional Add-ins and Variations
Peanut butter: While you prepare this kale blueberry smoothie, you have the option of adding a bit of peanut butter. It’s a source of high protein and it has a great taste.Chocolate drizzle: If you’re a chocolate lover, consider adding a slight chocolate drizzle to the rest of your ingredients in the blender.Extra fruit: Don’t hesitate to add extra fruit to this smoothie. You can add diced kiwi fruit, raspberries, and even strawberries into the mixture.Oats or chia seeds: You can add rolled oats, oat flour, or chia seeds to the blueberry kale smoothie recipe. They will keep you fuller for longer as well as bring other health benefits. If needed, make sure the oats are gluten-free.
How to Make a Blueberry Kale Smoothie?
It’s easy to make this healthy blueberry kale smoothie. Add all ingredients into a food processor or high-speed blender and blend. Add a bit of extra ice if you want it super cold. Pour into a glass or jar and add your favorite toppings (optional). I like to add a few fresh blueberries on top of the smoothie to give it that extra oomph for this kale and blueberries beverage.
How to Serve this Smoothie?
You can serve this smoothie in a cup while drinking it with a straw or consuming it with a spoon. Or, you can make a smoothie bowl. To do so, you can thicken the smoothie up with a bit more banana and then pour it into a bowl. Then top with your favorite healthy toppings.
How to Store this Smoothie?
This smoothie is best enjoyed immediately or within a day. Store: When you’re storing it for later, use a mason jar with a lid (or another airtight container). Store it in the fridge to keep it fresh and flavorful and consume it within the day. Freeze: You can also prepare the smoothie and transfer it to a large Ziplock bag. Then freeze the smoothie until solid and store in the freezer for several months.
