I realize that I am posting a burger recipe when it’s almost the end of summer. But there’s still the Labor Day weekend so I guess it’s not too late! We did nothing, this weekend, like nothing. Just eat>sleep>repeat, yeah sometime’s it best to do just that. Things have been pretty busy for both of us so it was nice to take a break and just relax for 2 days. We didn’t even watch TV except the GOT finale, did you guys watch it? This season was my favorite of all the seasons but why do we have to wait for 2 years to know what happens next. That is such a torture! Do you guys have any plans for long weekend? We are actually planning to clean our house, like deep cleaning and just throwing away everything. Okay, not everything but there’s just too much junk that needs to thrown away. My dad and brothers are coming here to Seattle in the 1st week of September and we want to clean up a bit before that. I am looking forward to their visit, it will be nice change for them and I will also get to spend some time with my family. Last 1 year has been very hard for all of us, so I am hoping this trip would change things for the better, my dad especially needs a break.
Other than house cleaning, I also plan to make and grill these easy vegan black bean burgers over the weekend. These are so easy and you can make them in no time, literally. I made these burgers for lunch few weeks and they got two thumbs up from Sarvesh, which is actually a huge deal. Sarvesh doesn’t like any of the veggie burgers that we get here, he only likes Indian style veggie burgers with potato and paneer like this Aloo Tikki Burger. So, for him to actually like a black bean burger was a big win for me. My black bean burgers are little different than most recipes that you would find online.
Here’s what makes these Vegan Black Bean Burgers different and utterly delicious!
✓ Poblano pepper: roasting really brings out the flavors and the addition of poblano pepper makes these burgers so good. ✓ Sauteed onion & garlic: sauteing onion and garlic in a teaspoon of oil before adding to the burger enhances the flavor. ✓ Garbanzo bean flour: roasted or not, it’s great either way in these black bean burgers and helps to hold the patty together. If you have time, I recommend roasting the flour in a skillet till fragrant and then use in the recipe. ✓ Mixed nuts: I used roasted mixed nuts in the recipe. So there were pecans, almonds, cashews and pistachios, you may use a single type of nut if you want. ✓ Spices: ancho chile, cumin, paprika and garam masala! Not to forget nutritional yeast. ✓ Cilantro & lemon juice: both added a lot of flavor in these burgers.
These Easy Black Bean Burgers
✓ will not break apart during grilling or frying. ✓ are really flavorful. ✓ have a wonderful texture due to all the chunks ✓ the burger patty freezes well. ✓ the burger patty is actually vegan and gluten-free. Hope you guys enjoy grilling these easy black bean burgers over the long weekend. I would love to hear back from you if you give them a try!
Method
Roast poblano pepper on direct heat till charred, around 6-7 minutes. Remove the skin, stem and seeds. Transfer the roasted poblano pepper to a food processor along with black beans, nutritional yeast, ancho chile, cumin powder, smoked paprika and garam masala. Pulse few times, till everything is combined. Remember to not pulse it too much, we don’t want the material to turn into a smooth paste. This is important for texture. Set aside.
In the same food processor, pulse nuts till coarsely ground. Again, make sure to not grind them to a smooth powder, chunks are important. I used roasted mixed nuts here, you may use only walnuts/pecans/cashews. Set aside. Add 1 teaspoon oil to a small pan. Once hot, add onion and garlic. Cook till onion and garlic turn light golden in colors, around 4-5 minutes. Transfer the sauteed onion and garlic to a large bowl. Add the bean-poblano mixture to it and also add the pulsed nuts. Mix everything together. Add salt, pepper, chopped cilantro, garbanzo bean flour and lemon juice. Mix using your hands.
Add bread crumbs and mix everything together till you have a nice dough. Divided the dough into 5-6 equal parts and shape into a burger patty. Heat 2 tablespoons oil in a skillet. Cook the burger patty in hot oil till golden brown from both sides.
Enjoy with your favorite toppings – lettuce, onion, tomato, sriracha!
- Adjust spice levels to taste.
- The burger patty freezes well. Black Bean Burgers
